San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, general manager John Lynch, and quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello were in attendance for Justin Fields’ pro day in Columbus, Ohio, last week. The same trio will represent the team on Monday at former North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance’s second pro day workout in Fargo, per NBC Sports Bay Area.

On March 26, San Francisco surrendered four draft picks, including their first-rounders in the next three drafts, to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for the No. 3 overall pick. The team is expected to select a future replacement for
Jimmy Garoppolo, with the three leading candidates being Fields, Lance, and Mac Jones of Alabama.

Jones was the betting favorite to be the No. 3 pick until Fields’ workout last week. Oddsmakers then placed the former Ohio State Buckeye at the top of the list. Lance’s workout on Monday could have a similar impact.

The 2021 NFL Draft kicks off on April 29 from Cleveland, Ohio.

Justin Fields of Ohio State will hold a second pro day workout on Wednesday. Five days later, Trey Lance of North Dakota State will take part in his second. Both are trying to ensure that they are selected ahead of Mac Jones of Alabama.

Trevor Lawrence of Clemson is expected to be drafted No. 1 overall. The New York Jets are expected to select Zach Wilson of BYU at No. 2. Assuming San Francisco targets a quarterback, that leaves Jones, Fields, and Lance as San Francisco’s choices at No. 3.

Jones is the overwhelming favorite to be the pick if you ask members of the national media. Fans would much prefer the more athletic and higher ceilinged prospects in Fields or Lance.

Zierlein: Trey Lance is the perfect playmaker for Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers

By David Bonilla

Apr 10, 2021

It’s been nearly two weeks since NFL Media analyst Lance Zierlein released his last mock draft. In it, he had the San Francisco 49ers selecting Trey Lance of North Dakota State with the No. 3 overall pick instead of Justin Fields of Ohio State or Mac Jones of Alabama.

It doesn’t sound like his opinion of what head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch should do come April 29 has changed. While Zierlein’s colleagues, Steve Wyche and Maurice Jones-Drew, made excellent cases for Fields to be San Francisco’s pick, Zierlein stuck with his choice of Lance and defended the decision during a segment on NFL Network.

“This is the guy San Francisco should be
